Your First Visit

Wondering what you should expect for your first Chiropractic visit?

Whether this is your first experience with Chiropractic or just your first visit with one of our Doctors, we want you to have a clear picture of what to expect!

  • Paperwork (10-15 minutes)

Prior to your appointment, you will be required to fill out paperwork regarding information on your current complaint, past health history, medications, surgeries, etc. These forms help our Providers have a better understanding of the whole picture. You may even be required to fill out a few extra forms depending on your Insurance Provider.

  • History (10-15 minutes)

Once you are in the treatment room, your Provider will ask you a series of questions related to your area of complaint. They will ask about the location of pain including a detailed description on how it started and what makes this pain better or worse. You will be asked about treatment history and any past injuries, surgeries, imaging or medications.

At Milan Center, our Providers treat the entire body and look for the cause of your pain (which may be different than the site of your pain). At this point, your Provider will ask you about your diet because the foods you consume play a large role in your bodies ability to recover. You will also be asked about your quality of sleep, alcohol and drug use and several other factors that may be exacerbating your inflammatory response.

  • Physical Exam (15-20 minutes)

Our Providers will perform a very detailed, comprehensive exam to determine the cause and source of your pain. It is crucial to asses the entire body or surrounding areas to determine any associated dysfunctions that could be contributing to your complaint. For example, a chronic knee issue could be stemming from dysfunction and improper mechanics at the ankle. Just like a low back complaint could be the result of faulty hip mobility!

This exam will include orthopedic tests, neurologic testing, and functional testing. Imaging such as X rays, MRI and CT may be needed depending on your complaint and exam findings. If this is the case, we will help you to set up an appointment for this!

  • Review of Findings (<5 minutes)

After completion of your physical exam, your Provider will discuss their findings and the best course of treatment for your individual case. The Provider will suggest tissues that are potentially damaged and address any contributing factors to your complaint as well.

  • Treatment (20-25 minutes)

With your history and exam complete, the doctor will begin treatment. This treatment will vary by the individual and will address your joints, nerves, muscles, tendons, ligament and movement patterns.  We use soft tissue work, cupping, instrument assisted soft tissue work, taping and manipulation as a part of our treatments. Some or all of these techniques will be used for you. Exercises to encourage proper movement patterns will also be performed.

It is common to experienced mild soreness 1-2 days after treatment, especially if you are brand new to Chiropractic.

Now that you know what to expect, please do not hesitate to ask your Provider any clarifying questions! We are here to help.
